Assessment can have transformational effects on learning. Effective assessment underpins language learning, but poor assessment practices can reduce motivation and undermine the curriculum. Teachers are being asked to take more and more responsibility for assessing learners and urgently need to develop expertise in assessment. Yet surveys and experience have repeatedly shown that their knowledge and skills in this critical area fall well short of what is needed.

36th Annual TESOL France International Colloquium is held in Telecom ParisTech, Paris on 17-19 November 2017. The plenary speakers are Marjorie Rosenberg ( IATEFL President), Stephen Ryan (Waseda University, Tokyo), and Marie-Hélène Fasquel-Erhart (Lycée International Nelson Mandela). The theme of the conference this year is "Language Connects People".

2017 is the 50th anniversary of the first annual meeting of BAAL. The theme of the conference – Diversity and Applied Linguistics – will enable us to engage with the notion of diversity both of and in Applied Linguistics, in a diversifying world, in this anniversary year. What opportunities are enabled? What challenges are presented? What are the key questions for the field, as we take stock and look forward?

The BAAL TEA SIG invites proposals for this event related to the main theme and covering one or more of the sub-themes below. (These sub-themes are intended to capture major areas of interest but are not intended as an exhaustive list. Proposals on other aspects of the main theme, Innovation in EAP Assessment, will also be considered).

14th European Association for Language Testing and Assessment (EALTA) conference invites participants to critically reflect and review language assessment and testing practices for immigration, integration and mobility purposes. We encourage views from multiple perspectives and cross-disciplinary papers which may combine language testing and assessment with insights from other fields relevant to this theme. While the conference will be held in English, the working language of EALTA, we particularly encourage contributions which are focused on languages other than English.
